This stylish and efficient hybrid compact SUV might just be the perfect fit for your small family.
Are you in the market for a family car that effortlessly combines style, space, safety, and entertainment? Look no further than the 2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid. Recently, I had the pleasure of test-driving the 2023 Honda CR-V AWD Sport Touring in the stunning Canyon River Blue exterior, and let me tell you, it’s a step up from the previous generation.
A Stylish Upgrade
The 2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid boasts a captivating remodel that caught my eye instantly. The Canyon River Blue exterior is a showstopper, revealing different hues depending on the light—a detail that adds a touch of elegance. Priced at $39,845, the 5-passenger SUV delivers all the essentials for families: space, safety, comfort, and entertainment.
Boxy Charm with a Modern Twist
As someone in my late 30s, the rugged and boxy look of the 6th generation CR-V appeals to my sense of style. It strikes the perfect balance—practical for a mom but without screaming “mom car.” The 19” black wheels, especially paired with the Canyon River Blue paint, give it a sophisticated edge.
The exterior features an open-surface mesh grille flanked by multi-segment LED headlights, exuding toughness. The Sport Touring trim I test-drove had silver molds, but with the Canyon River Blue paint, black would be my preference. While it’s not a performance vehicle, the updated CVT engine provides smooth power delivery and acceleration.
Powerful Performance with a Hybrid Twist
The 2023 Honda CR-V comes equipped with a new 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder Atkinson cycle hybrid engine. This hybrid powertrain, combined with two electric motors, boasts a total power output of 204 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque.
While the CR-V isn’t a performance vehicle, it certainly holds its own, thanks to the updated CVT engine. Contrary to common perceptions of CVTs being slow and lacking personality, my experience was quite the opposite. The power delivery was smooth, and acceleration was surprisingly responsive. It’s a testament to the refinement Honda has achieved with the 2023 model.
Drive modes, including Normal, ECON, Snow, and Sport (hybrid only), add versatility to the driving experience. I found the Sport mode particularly engaging for a more exciting drive.
Not only does it offer a towing capacity of up to 1,000 pounds, but it also delivers impressive fuel efficiency. The fuel efficiency figures are noteworthy, with 29-30 MPG for the 1.5-liter engine and AWD/FWD, and an impressive 37-40 MPG for the 2-liter hybrid in AWD/FWD formats.
Comfort and Space for the Whole Family
One of the standout features of the CR-V is its comfortable and spacious interior. The 10-way power driver’s seat ensures a comfortable driving experience, while the heated front seats and leather-wrapped steering wheel were a welcome touch during chilly fall mornings. The cabin is 2.7 inches longer than the previous version, providing better headroom, legroom, shoulder room, and hip room for all passengers.
The rear seats offer eight angles of reclining. This was something my toddler noticed and loved too. And with a 60/40 split, you can customize the space to fit your needs. The total luggage capacity is an impressive 36.3 cu-ft, expanding to 76.5 cu-ft with the rear seats folded down. It’s a practical choice for families with varying storage needs.
Tech-Savvy Interior
The 2023 Honda CR-V doesn’t disappoint when it comes to entertainment and connectivity. The standard 7-inch digital instrument cluster and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system support Android Auto and Apple Car Play connectivity. The Sport Touring model, which I test-drove, takes it up a notch with a 9-inch entertainment touchscreen and wireless connectivity for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
The cabin offers ample storage and charging options, including designated spaces for two smartphones, USB-A and USB-C charging ports, and illuminated USB-C charging ports for rear seat passengers. The available 12-speaker BOSE premium sound system on the Sport Touring trim ensures a delightful driving experience.
Safety First
The CR-V comes with some essential safety features that make driving safer for everyone:
- Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA): This feature helps keep the car stable during turns and slippery conditions. So, even if the road is a bit tricky, VSA helps you stay in control.
- Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS): TPMS keeps an eye on your tire pressure. If the pressure gets too low, it gives you a heads-up. Proper tire pressure ensures a smoother and safer ride.
- Honda Sensing: This is like having a virtual co-pilot. It includes:
- Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC): Your car adjusts its speed automatically to maintain a safe following distance. It’s like cruise control with an added safety buffer.
- Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS): If the system senses an impending collision, it can apply the brakes to help reduce the impact. It’s an extra layer of protection.
- Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS): LKAS gently corrects your steering if you unintentionally drift out of your lane. It’s like a subtle nudge to keep you on the right path.
- Road Departure Mitigation (RDM): RDM can determine if you cross over detected lanes without signaling and provide steering assistance to return to your lane or provide braking to prevent you from leaving the roadway entirely. It’s like a helpful guide to keep you on the road.
- Traffic Jam Assist: This feature is like having a co-pilot for heavy traffic. It can help control the acceleration, braking, and steering, making stop-and-go traffic more manageable. It takes a bit of the stress out of congestion.
All these features work together to create a driving experience that’s not just safe, but also confident and stress-free. They’re like having an extra set of eyes and hands to watch out for you on the road.
What I Loved About the Honda CR-V
- Seatbelt warning/reminder
- Walk away door locks for hands-free convenience.
- Reclinable rear seats with lower child-seat anchors.
- A quiet cabin thanks to sound-deadening insulation.
- Redesigned seats with additional lumbar, thigh, and pelvis support making longer drives more comfortable
- Easy-to-find LATCH for hassle-free car seat installation.
- Hands-free access power tailgate.
- Multiview rearview camera.
- Rain-sensing windshield wipers
Things to Consider
While the 2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid impresses on many fronts, it’s essential to note that there isn’t a panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats, or rear seat releases in the trunk on any trim. The hybrid option is exclusively available on the Sport and Sport Touring trims.
Who Is the 2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid For?
This hybrid compact SUV is a great fit for commuters and families of 3-4 seeking reliability, efficiency, and value. If you need an SUV that ticks all the boxes without breaking the bank, the 2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid deserves a spot on your list.
How Much Does the 2023 Honda CR-V Cost?
The 2023 CR-V lineup has four trims: EX, Sport, EX-L, and Sport Touring. The EX and EX-L have a gasoline engine, while the Sport and Sport Touring are hybrids. Starting at $29,500, the base CR-V is an excellent choice, with the hybrid Sport Trim priced at $33,350. For added features, the Sport-L trim is available at $36,350, and the top-tier Sport Touring trim that I test-drove offers premium options at $39,845.
Impressed With the Upgrades
My experience with the 2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid left me impressed with its style, performance, and family-friendly features. It’s a compelling option for those in search of a hybrid compact SUV that effortlessly combines practicality and modern design.
